Who writes this, and who checks it
Authors and Reviewers
Frame by Frame is produced by a small editorial team working collectively. Entries are published under the team rather than under individual bylines, and every entry passes through the same review sequence before it appears.
How the work is divided
Four distinct roles contribute to every record on this site. In a small team the same person may cover more than one of them, but no single person completes an entry alone.
| Research | Locates primary and institutional documentation for a proposed event, establishes the date, and assembles the source list. Research does not write the published text. |
|---|---|
| Editorial writing | Produces the summary, historical context and analysis, working only from the material research has verified. Writers may not add claims that are not in the source file. |
| Fact review | Independently rechecks every date, name, attribution and numerical claim against the cited sources. Anything that cannot be confirmed is removed or explicitly marked as disputed. |
| Subject review | Assesses whether the interpretation is defensible, whether the significance claimed is proportionate, and whether the entry reflects current scholarly understanding rather than repeated popular assertion. |
Qualifications we require
Contributors are expected to demonstrate one or more of the following before working on published material: formal study in film history, animation, media history or a related discipline; documented professional experience in animation production; or a record of published research in the field. Enthusiasm is not a qualification, and neither is familiarity with the subject as an audience member.
Anyone who cannot read and evaluate an archival source is not asked to write about one.
Why entries are not individually bylined
Each record is the product of several people applying different checks, and a byline would misrepresent that. The collective attribution is a description of how the work is actually made, not an attempt to avoid responsibility. The editorial team is accountable for every claim on this site, and the corrections process exists so that accountability is enforceable by readers.
Where an individual contributor's expertise is material to a specific entry, that contribution is noted within the entry itself.
Editorial contact
Reaching the editorial team
Questions about sourcing, requests to correct a record, or offers to contribute should be sent to the editorial address listed on the contact page. Correspondence about a specific entry should quote its title and year so that it can be located quickly.
