King Kong makes an animated creature a leading role
Eighteen inches of metal, rubber and rabbit fur, asked to carry a film
The model at the center of King Kong stood about eighteen inches tall, built on a jointed metal armature with sponge rubber musculature and a covering of trimmed rabbit fur. It was moved by hand, a fraction of an inch at a time, twenty-four times for every second of screen action. In March 1933 audiences watched it die at the top of a building and were reported to be in tears.

A decade of preparation
Willis O'Brien had been developing model animation since the mid-1910s and had already carried a feature with it in 1925. The advances he brought to this production were as much about integration as about movement: rear projection to place actors inside animated scenes, miniature rear-projection screens built into the model sets, and glass paintings that let a foreground element and a distant animated figure share one exposure.
The compositing is the hidden achievement. Live-action performers and a hand-moved puppet occupy the same frame with matched perspective and consistent light, which is the technical problem visual effects would spend the next sixty years refining.
Performance under a magnifying glass
What distinguishes the animation is restraint. The creature is given small, unproductive movements: it scratches, it looks away, it examines a wound, it reacts before it acts. These are the details animators use to signal interiority, and they were being applied to a dramatic role rather than to a comic one for the first time.
The fur, which shifts and ripples because human hands disturbed it between frames, was regarded at the time as a defect. It has since been recognized as part of why the performance reads as living rather than mechanical, and later filmmakers have deliberately reintroduced comparable texture.
The long shadow
Model animation became a Hollywood speciality for the next six decades, sustained by the people O'Brien trained and by the audience this film created. It also established a durable narrative use for the technique: the animated creature as a figure of sympathy rather than menace.
That lineage ended abruptly in 1993, when digital creatures replaced model animation in effects work almost overnight. The skills did not disappear; the animators who made the first convincing digital dinosaurs had learned their timing from stop motion, and several had trained on armatures.
